Once a friend, now a friend, always a friend.
I had once an apartment full of joy and of barks. My 5-year old Labrador, Razor, whom has never failed to make me happy when I am down, whom has filled me with energy whenever I arrived home weary from the paperwork. But now, this house is seemingly so empty without his presence. His death two weeks ago has brought me a fresh wave of grieve when I think about that incident that had happened in a remote area of the park...
Like always, I trudged down the pathway leading to my apartment with heavy footsteps. It was again another tiring day at work. I placed the key into the lock and turned, without any warning I was brought down by hundred and twenty pounds of fur. 'Stop it, Razor!' I cried as I was 'cleaned' by an onslaught of his slobber (saliva). I push the dog away and stood up. As I look at his face, the tiring day that has happened just an hour ago has dissipated into the air. Oh well, since it has just past evening, I took out the dog lease and tied onto his collar.
Entering the park I breathe in the cold evening air and began my stroll. All was well, when suddenly Razor went totally crazy. It looked into a direction where there was no one and started to bark agitatedly as if something at that direction has provoked him. Staring in the direction, there was nothing there but an endless darkness looming ahead. Going berserk he gnashed his teeth and pulled away from my grasp and tore into the darkness. As any normal homo sapiens will do I went after him.
It was getting dark but still Razor could not be found. Anxiously I called out he's name. There was a sudden whimpering to my right. I turned and walked towards the sound. Suddenly, my surrounding temperature dropped and someone or something whispered into my ear. I snapped back and cried out as I looked directly into a being which is taller than me by a head with red fiery eyes. I stumbled back as it quickly advanced towards me. As I shielded my face in defense, a sudden bark made me look up. It was Razor! Growling to the being, he pounced on it and started to bite furiously. Roaring in pain, the being took out what seemed like a hand and grabbed onto the dog's back and threw it to the ground. Although wounded, he continued to attack the being.
The battle continued on until the being grabbed the dog by the leg and swung it into a tree. With that, the being disappeared into thin air, as it disappeared, the darkness that had loomed over the park retreated and a starlit sky lit up the park. Stunned momentarily, I regained my senses and rushed towards my savior. Breathing labored it licked me on my cheek and gave a soft whimper. As I hugged him closer, I could feel his body slowly turning cold. The last thing I knew about him was that he pass onto the other world in my hands. A friend that I have known for five years has died and I cried out in agony. Holding on his limp body I took him to a crematorium and had him buried with grace.
Till now, as I stared at his pictures I never wanted to keep another dog...in loyalty towards him. Till now, I still visit his tablet. Till now I treated him as a human. What he had done saved my life. Very little humans would do that and that made him a hero. Dogs, man's best friend, now and always will be true.
